ichard and his son Nicholas were mercers, a cloth merchant,
so basically our man was a
medieval salesman. Who, having made a
bit of cash in the city, bought himself a big estate
in the country, not
too far from the city just half a days ride on a main road (as the roman road between Dover and London, Watling street was not only
still in use but actually ran across his land) and near a thriving port too (Greenhithe town was founded by the Vikings and was still
a vibrant trading port at this time). So pretty similar to modern life so far!
